PORTLAND , OR – Trainer Ben Root , who captured last week's O.T.B.A. Sales Stakes with Eighty Eighty, returned with three starters in Saturday's $19,280 Janet Wineberg Stakes and watched his first time starter, One Fast Cowgirl, capture all the spoils.
Owned by Root's mother, Margaret, she broke clean and set early fractions of :23 and :46 4/5 while completing the six furlong test in 1:13 2/5.
“We initially set her up for a Maiden Special but figured we'd try this” said trainer Ben Root . “The way the race set up was a complete surprise to me. I figured she'd run a few lengths off the early pacesetters then make her move when the time was right. Today she went right to the lead and just refused to give it up.”
Bred by the owner, this two–year-old filly by Oregon leading sire Baquero out of Excellent Fettle, was not the first choice by Root. “I figured Miss Bliss was the strongest of the bunch. She ran a nice race in her own right and closed well, but this filly [One Fast Cowgirl] just wouldn't let up.”
Ridden by Kris O'Donnell, it was the first mount she's ever been named on for Root. “She has been galloping horses for us and has helped us out. She's worked hard the last couple of years and the other day when my dad (Dr. Jack Root) and I were trying to figure out whom to put on her, we saw Kristin standing in front of us. He suggested we give her a shot after all the hard work she's done. It worked out nicely for everybody.”
Root will be considering One Fast Cowgirl for the Lassie Stakes to be held on November 20 th .
One Fast Cowgirl is also a full sister to Might E Man. Might E Man was nicknamed “The People's Horse” when Lynn Meech of Longview, WA won a partial share of Honorary Ownership through a Portland Meadows promotion last season. Might E Man captured the 2004 Preview Stakes in March.
